L'amalgame dentaire est composé à 50% de mercure liquide qui se solidifie lorsqu'il est mélangé avec les autres composants de l'amalgame tels que l’argent, le cuivre, l'étain et le zinc. Bien qu'il ait été garanti que l'amalgame dentaire est sans danger, il a été démontré qu'une fois solidifié des vapeurs de mercure se dégagent, entre autres, lors de la mastication des aliments ou lors de la consommation de liquides chauds.

Le contenu mercuriel des amalgames dentaires peut se transformer en mercure non organique ou mercure organique et être absorbé par l'organisme, lentement et régulièrement par ingestion de salive et inhalation ; les vapeurs inhalées, passe dans l'appareil digestif, arrivent dans les poumons puis dans le sang et peuvent s'accumuler dans différentes parties du corps (reins, foie, estomac, os, muscles, graisse, prostate, testicules, cerveau, etc.);

Considérant que l'Organisation Mondiale de la Santé (OMS) a déclaré dans son 'Policy Paper' daté de 2005 («le Mercure dans les Soins de Santé») que le «Mercure est très toxique» ; en outre, qu'il peut être fatal s'il est inhalé et dangereux s'il est absorbé par la peau;

Considérant qu'environ 80% des vapeurs de mercure inhalées sont absorbées dans le sang à travers les poumons et que le mercure peut avoir des effets néfastes sur le système nerveux, l'appareil digestif, respiratoire, le système immunitaire et les reins, outre des dommages aux poumons;

Considérant que les effets néfastes de l’exposition au mercure peuvent se manifester par: des tremblements, des déficiences visuelles et auditives, une paralysie, des insomnies, une instabilité émotionnelle; des déficits de la croissance lors du développement du fœtus, un déficit de l'attention et des retards de croissance pendant l'enfance;

Considérant que des études récentes indiquent qu’il n’existe pas de seuil en deçà duquel des effets néfastes se produisent ne peut être déterminé;

Considérant qu'en 1991, l'Organisation Mondiale de la Santé a confirmé que le mercure contenu dans l'amalgame dentaire représente la source majeure de vapeur de mercure en milieu non industriel, exposant la population à des niveaux de mercure nettement supérieurs à ceux fixés pour les aliments et l'air;

Considérant que la libération de mercure est maximale pendant la pose ou l’extraction des amalgames;

Considérant qu'il existe des alternatives moins toxiques telles que la céramique et les composites sans Bisphénol A;

Considérant qu'aux Etats-Unis la Food and Drug Administration a reconnu que les composants des amalgames peuvent entraîner des problèmes de santé pour certaines personnes;

Considérant que plusieurs études scientifiques indiquent un lien entre une exposition au mercure et le déclenchement ou l'aggravation de différentes pathologies telles que la Sclérose en plaques, la maladie d’Alzheimer, la Sclérose Latérale Amyotrophique (SLA), l'Hypersensibilité Chimique Multiple, le syndrome de Fatigue Chronique, la Fibromyalgie, le syndrome de Candidose Chronique, ainsi que de plusieurs autres problèmes neurologiques immunitaires, dermatologiques, allergologiques, mentaux, digestifs, rénaux, visuels, ORL;

Considérant que l'utilisation de mercure dans les amalgames a également un impact négatif pour l'environnement qui pourrait être évité (la contamination environnementale par le mercure est due aux liquides organiques humains, par la crémation et les déchets déposés dans les cabinets dentaires même si un dispositif de séparation est disponible, etc.);

Bien qu'au plan scientifique il n'y ait pas de consensus quant aux dangers que représente l'amalgame;

Selon le principe de précaution invoqué par le Parlement Européen le 4 septembre 2008 dans le Plan d'Action à Moyen Terme 2004-2010 pour l'Environnement et la Santé;

Les signataires de la pétition EXIGENT que l'utilisation de l’amalgame dentaire au mercure soit interdite par la loi au niveau européen. En outre, que les dentistes soient impérativement formés pour enlever les amalgames en toute sécurité selon un protocole de protection quadruple (masque à oxygène, perforation à basse vitesse, digue en caoutchouc et forte aspiration) et EXIGENT que, tant que l’interdiction UE de poser des amalgames ne sera pas obligatoire dans l’UE, des dispositifs de séparation d’amalgame garantis soient installés pour être utilisés impérativement dans les cabinets dentaires.

Toutes ces questions doivent être examinées à la lumière de la révision de la Stratégie européenne sur le mercure de l'Union européenne qui est en cours. Nous attendons que la nouvelle stratégie de l'Union européenne sur le mercure comporte des mesures significatives aboutissant à l’arrêt de l’utilisation des amalgames dentaires.
